Barkat personally affixed the first of several new road signs pointing to the location of the new embassy, which is primarily comprised of the complex formerly utilized as the USA consulate in Jerusalem.

US Embassy' road signs went up in Jerusalem on Monday ahead of next week's opening of the mission in the city.

According to eyewitnesses, three signs were placed on one of the Jerusalem roads in English, Hebrew and Arabic.

Breaking with decades of USA diplomacy and worldwide consensus President Donald Trump announced on December 6 the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of the embassy, located until now in Tel Aviv.

In March, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said his country would relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 16, two days after the us move. US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and Trump's special representative for global negotiations, Jason Greenblatt, will also attend the opening.

The White House announced the official delegation to the opening on Monday, to be led by John Sullivan, deputy secretary of state. A large US delegation, headed by US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, is expected to attend the event. However, other countries have condemned the move as it ignited tensions with Palestinians who also claim the ancient city as its capital. "It is reality. I am proud and moved to have hung this morning the first new signs that were prepared for the U.S. Embassy", Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat wrote on Twitter. "By taking Jerusalem off the table, I wanted to make it clear that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and as for specific boundaries, I would support what both sides agreed to", Trump told an Israeli newspaper.

Israel considers the Trump declaration as recognition, albeit long delayed, of a historical fact.

The US will open its embassy in its current consulate in the capital's Arnona neighborhood on May 14.

He finished by saying that those who attend the ceremony will thus be sending an ominous message, a message that they encourage flagrant violations of global law and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. The annual holiday celebrates the reunification of Jerusalem with Israeli victory in the Six Day War.

The move prompted worldwide condemnation and triggered a wave of protests in the occupied Palestinian territories.
