Unfortunately this historic event will not be witnessed in its entirety by us North Americans, who have the worst seats on the planet - literally! We'll be treated to the cosmic display for nearly two hours; experts reckon the Blood Moon will last approximately one hour and 43 minutes in total.

The lunar eclipse will also be visible in India, and this will be a "Blood Moon" as well, where the Earth's satellite takes on a reddish tinge.

Lunar eclipse or Chandra Grahan is a phenomenon when Earth is aligned (falls in a line) directly with the Moon and the Sun, while the orbit of the Moon brings the orb into the Earth's shadow.

However the brightness of the red colour depends on how dirty the atmosphere is due to volcanic eruptions - and experts don't believe this particular blood moon will display a strong red. This eclipse will also be the longest eclipse we have had this century!

The sun shall be darkened and the moon shall turn to blood before the great and awful day of the Lord comes. The shadow cast by the moon is much smaller than that produced by our own planet. This means it will be passing through space at a point where the cone of Earth's shadow is wider, making the eclipse last longer.

And you don't have to worry about having a telescope to get a good view, with astronomers saying that there will be a very good view without the need for special equipment.

"Solar eclipses are risky because observing the Sun directly can damage your eyesight, but the light from a lunar eclipse is much fainter and so is completely safe. Don't miss Mars - the bright orange "star" near the moon on eclipse night", the ASSA said. That color is where the term "blood moon" comes from. Those of you in the United Kingdom should look for this eclipse starting in at around 11PM (that's 23:00 hours) local time. It was the first time in 152 years, a supermoon, a blue moon and a blood moon coincided. Eastern time, and the total eclipse will last from 3:30 to 5:13 p.m.

"I spoke with Mills Observatory and unfortunately they will not be opening for the lunar eclipse". There isn't slated to be another total lunar eclipse that long until the year 2123.
