Democratic Activist Ousts Incumbent Massachusetts Congressman in Primary

Boston City Council member Ayanna Pressley has unseated 10-term incumbent Rep. Michael Capuano, in a surprise upset in the Massachusetts Democratic primary Tuesday.

Pressley has always been identified as a rising star in the Democratic Party. Michael Capuano in the Democratic primary for the 7th Congressional district in MA.

And unlike Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political neophyte, the 44-year-old Pressley has a track record in Massachusetts' halls of power.

An emotional video of her finding out she had won has been shared thousands of times online.

Republicans didn't run a candidate in the heavily Republican Boston-based district, and Pressley is all but guaranteed to join the next Congress.

Pressley defeated Capuano by arguing that it was time for a change in representation in the district.

"Apparently the district just is very upset with lots of things that are going on. This is the way life goes", he said.

Mr. Capuano conceded the race to Ms. Pressley on Tuesday night, though the Associated Press had yet to declare a victor in the race.

Pressley is backed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the leftist socialist who defeated Crowley in NY on a message of pushing to "Abolish ICE".

The 7th Congressional District is the only one in the state where minorities comprise a majority of the population.

Ms Ocasio-Cortez congratulated Ms Pressley on Twitter and said the two had bonded over having people doubt their capability and experience. "And a reliable vote is not good enough".

A survivor of sexual assault at Boston University and during her childhood, Pressley has been a vocal supporter of victims of sexual violence since long before the #MeToo movement. Neal, the dean of the state's House delegation, first was elected in 1989.

Other Massachusetts Democratic incumbents held off challengers. Kennedy, the grandson of the late U.S. Sen.

Palfrey was endorsed by delegates to the Democratic state convention earlier this year.

Rep. Stephen F. Lynch easily won his Democratic primary Tuesday in his bid for a ninth full term. Baker will face Democrat Jay Gonzalez in November.

"At a time when our country is having trouble finding common ground on so many issues, we in MA are the exception", Baker told supporters.

Neither Gonzales nor his primary opponent Democrat Robert Massie, a longtime political and environmental activist, was well-known outside party activist circles.
