Across the U.S., younger, ethnically diverse candidates, many of them with far-left platforms, are reshaping the Democratic Party.

Notching yet another major upset win for the progressive movement over a corporate-funded establishment opponent, Boston city councilor Ayanna Pressley ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Mike Capuano (D-Mass.) Tuesday night in a landslide victory that provided further evidence of grassroots hunger for transformational change within the Democratic Party.

Pressley is now poised to become the only black member of Massachusetts' mostly male congressional delegation. Pressley defeated 10-term Rep. Michael Capuano, who had been endorsed by nearly every major figure in the state's political establishment, including Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh, the New York Times reports.

Pressley was scheduled to thank volunteers and supporters at her campaign headquarters Wednesday afternoon.

Teeming opposition on the left to Trump has fuelled primary wins for insurgent, women and minority candidates in Democratic primaries ahead of November's crucial midterm elections.

Trump has angered Democrats with his comments describing some immigrants as criminals, his verbal attacks on black athletes protesting racism and a vow to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion across the United States.

Ducey is appointing a McCain replacement until a special election is held at the same time as the November 2020 general election. Joseph Lieberman, a former United States senator and close friend, said on CNN: "I say goodbye and my heart will be heavy".

The contest also formed sharp divides among Boston's Democratic political and media elite. This is Ayanna Pressley in her victory speech Tuesday night. She ran on a platform of abolishing ICE-that's the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency-and speaking for prisoners behind bars. "It's not just good enough to see the Democrats back in power but it matters who those Democrats are".

The last time an incumbent Democratic House member lost a primary was in 2014, when Seth Moulton defeated former Rep. John Tierney, who brought significant personal baggage to the campaign.

The success of the insurgents could set the stage for intraparty conflict between the Democrats' rising left and more moderate congressmen such as Ohio's Representative Tim Ryan and Pennsylvania's newly elected Representative Conor Lamb. At the state level, plenty of other progressive women candidates have been quietly following suit, from Jillian Gilchrest in CT to Andrea Romero in New Mexico. "I know that wherever the pain exists, the solutions exist within that community as well".

Another veteran congressman, Democratic Rep. Richard Neal, won a spirited primary showdown with Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, a black attorney from Springfield who had hoped to become the first Muslim to serve in Congress from MA.
