Mike Zimmer concerned about Minnesota Vikings' struggling defense

"Early in the game, the protection was good, and then (Rams defensive tackle Aaron) Donald took it over a little bit at the end", Zimmer said.

The Vikings trimmed LA's lead to 31-28 late in the third quarter with Adam Thielen's 45-yard TD catch and a 2-point conversion. The AFC West is looking more and more like the Chiefs to lose, and if something doesn't change soon Philip Rivers could be looking at another statistically good year wasted in a mediocre record.

To the Rams credit, the addition of Brandin Cooks made an already explosive offense even more potent.

Not that the Vikings could have expected what Goff did with the deep ball. Between just those two teams, there's a whopping $448,269,294 tied to players who will see the field for "Thursday Night Football", and that's not necessarily the kind of money that goes away when those players are traded or released.

Yet the raw numbers don't describe the series of high-difficulty, high-reward throws that he completed in a brilliant four-touchdown first half. The following afternoon, Zimmer wasn't in any better of a mood when he was asked to assess the coverage breakdowns that led to five touchdown passes by Jared Goff.

Goff was ideal, at least according to his passer rating of 158.3 in his third consecutive 300-yard game.

"I thought we did a good job protecting all night, we did a good job keeping me upright", Goff told FOX Sports' Kristina Pink after the game.

The Rams have been largely outstanding during their unbeaten start to a season that has picked up right where McVay's first team left off.

One week after giving up 27 points in the first half and getting blown out as 16 1/2-point favourites in Buffalo, the Vikings gave up 28 before halftime against LA. It's just a very odd one.

"Since returning home to Los Angeles two years ago, we have received a lot of feedback from our fans about their love for these iconic uniforms", Rams Chief Operating Officer Kevin Demoff said.

The Rams had three wideouts with 10-plus yards receiving. Their first drive of the second half ended when Hekker's pass out of punt formation fell incomplete in the end zone.

Throughout the game, the LA offense rotated formations, route concepts, shifts and motions to keep the defense on its toes and Goff was able to make almost every throw which was required of him.

"He came off the back side and ran a wheel route off the back side, and we didn't help him", Zimmer said of Barr's efforts on this play.

The Rams totaled 556 yards against Minnesota's defense as they attacked on the ground and through the air.

"Jared put it in about a six-inch box that only he could fit it into, " McVay said.

Kupp also caught a 70-yard TD pass in the second quarter, finishing with the first multi-touchdown game of his two-year career. Not the one-on-one situation you want, and Minnesota's safeties were otherwise occupied.

Smith was one of five Minnesota defensive players to make the Pro Bowl last season.

With the win, L.A.is now 4-0, its best start since they were 4-0 in 2001 back in St. Louis. They do have 7 sacks, but outside of that, opposing teams have been having moving up field at will.
