It is nearly 29 metres taller than China's Spring Temple Buddha that stands at 153 metres, and nearly twice as high as the 93-metre Statue of Liberty in NY. "The statue will remain a source of inspiration for generations to come", his grandnephew Dhirubhai Patel, who lives in Gujarat's Vadodara, said. "Is remembering the country's great personalities a crime?"

Talking about the northeast India's initiatives in the field of organic farming, the PM said, "The northeast has vast natural beauty and the people here are extremely talented". But the authorities are taking no chances in case community groups stage protests to demand compensation for land taken to erect the Statue of Unity, which cost 29.9 billion rupees. "I hope every Indian resident will take pride on this remarkable feat", PM Modi said in his monthly "Mann ki Baat" radio address. Sardar Patel wanted India to be strong, sensitive, vigilant and inclusive.

"The 31st of October this year will be special on one more account- on this day, we shall dedicate the statue of unity of the nation as a true tribute to Sardar Patel". After he became prime minister in 2014, he pledged to complete it despite some critics balking at the almost $403 million price tag, which they said could be better spent on welfare programs for India's poor.

According to foreign media, the size of the statue reflects Modi's massive political ego as India's global aspirations are on the rise. The statue is made up of 1,700 tonnes of bronze, 1,850 tonnes of bronze cladding, 70,000 metric tonnes of cement and 24,500 metric tonnes of steel.

The statue is part of Modi's poll promise which helped the BJP come to power in 2014 by defeating the Congress. "The actual signboard is that of the statue with its logo, stating that is a government of India project", the official said.
