The high-profile midterm cycle that produced a record number of women contenders and candidates of colour meant several winners will take office as trailblazers, marking firsts for their race and gender.

Omar is also the first Somali American to serve in the US Congress.

"Having extra women in these institutions makes just a little bit more cultural change in how things are done", says Stephanie Schriock, president of Emily's List, which works to elect pro-choice women Democrats.

This makes Ocasio-Cortez, who turned 29 last month, the youngest person ever elected to congress.

In Massachusetts, Ayanna Pressley ran unopposed as a Democrat and became the first black woman to represent the commonwealth in Congress.

Young women made their voices heard, as well, with two-thirds of voters younger than 30 voting for Democrats for Congress, compared with 32 per cent who voted for Republicans, according to exit polls. One year ago, she was working in a restaurant, she ran a grassroots campaign with a progressive agenda including universal medicare, gun control and access to affordable housing.
