SpaceX to launch US spy satellite in first national security mission

You can watch the SpaceX launch live online - it has a 26-minute launch window to send its Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, with the live webcast set to begin around 15 minutes before liftoff.

On its Twitter account, SpaceX announced that the team called a hold due to an out-of-family reading on its first-stage sensors.

The company said that due to mission requirements, they will not attempt to land Falcon 9's rocket after launch.

The goal is to set up a command to oversee and organize space operations, accelerate technical advances and find more effective ways to defend US assets in space, including the vast constellations of satellites that American forces rely on for navigation, communications and surveillance.

Third up will be Arianespace, which is flying one of Russia's Soyuz rockets and launching a satellite from Europe's spaceport in French Guiana at roughly 11:37 am Eastern Standard Time (EST).

ULA's Delta IV Heavy launch is still on the books for later today, and if successful, could mark the start of a fantastic day of rocket launches.
