Indonesian rescuers on Tuesday used drones and sniffer dogs to search for survivors along the devastated west coast of Java hit by a series of tsunamis that killed at least 373 people, warning more victims are expected to be uncovered as the search expands.

Now this disaster has displaced 11,000 more people in Java and Sumatra, who are residing in government buildings and camping out in tents beside hospitals.

The Indonesian Medical Association said it has sent doctors, medical supplies and equipment, adding that numerous injured require orthopedic surgery or neurosurgery.

"There were so many tourists there and I think that's why the disaster also caused a lot of casualties and injuries because there was so many families there due to the holiday season", she said.

At least 281 people have died from the tsunami, which struck the Indonesian coastline without warning Saturday night.

At least 280 people were killed, hundreds injured and numerous buildings were heavily damaged when the tsunami struck, nearly without warning, along the rim of the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra islands, late on Saturday.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo arrived at the disaster area by helicopter.

Saturday saw giant waves crash into coastal towns on the islands of Sumatra and Java. Before daybreak, disaster crews were gathering the dead and creating outdoor morgues piled with orange body bags - scenes that have been repeated many times this year across Indonesia.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia's disaster agency, said the preliminary theory was that the tsunami was caused by "an undersea landslide resulting from volcanic activity on Anak Krakatau".

Soon after guests started arriving at the venue the bride and groom made a stunning appearance and sent the paparazzi in a tizzy. It wasn't too far from here that I took Madhu (Priyanka's mother) out for lunch to ask if I can marry her daughter.

The tsunami's impacts were compounded by a tidal wave caused by the full moon, BMKG said in a news release.

The 1,000-foot -high Anak Krakatau lies on an island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra islands, linking the Indian Ocean and the Java Sea.

"I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the Indonesian people who have been hit so hard once again by natural disaster", Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said on Twitter.

The eruption of Krakatoa in the 19th century killed more than 30,000 people and hurled so much ash that it turned day to night in the area and reduced global temperatures.

Anak Krakatau, which means child of Krakatau, is the island that emerged from the area once occupied by Krakatau, which was destroyed in 1883.

As hundreds of military personnel and volunteers scan the debris-strewn streets, scientists continue looking for answers as to what caused the country's second deadly tsunami this year.

An unpredictable chain of events and an inadequate early warning system combined to deadly effect with the tsunami that slammed into coastal areas of Indonesia killing almost 300 people, disaster officials and experts said Monday. He added that it's possible for an eruption to trigger a landslide above ground or beneath the ocean, with both capable of producing waves. The fact that the tsunami was triggered by a volcano, and not by an quake, may be the reason why no tsunami warning was signalled, scientists said.
