It's clear that viewership was massive and that Netflix has the opportunity to drive viewers to films that wouldn't be traditional blockbuster movies. Given that the streaming giant nearly never reveals any numbers, it's a surprising reveal, but one, given the proliferation of Bird Box memes online, that seems to make sense.

Shares of Netflix are up 33% YTD.

According to the streaming giant, the film has already been viewed by more than 45-million accounts, setting a new mark for strongest opening week by a Netflix original. Nobody else can verify Netflix's claims, nor do they know exactly what "watched" means in this context. As many pointed out, with the amount of viewers who share accounts, there really is no telling how many actual people have seen Bird Box.

A Netflix representative clarified Saturday that the service only counted views that had surpassed 70 percent of the total run time, including credits.

It is worth wondering whether such statistics can influence the filmmaker's career, given that they can't be backed up.
